Troy Grant's story begins with an upbringing in the foster care system. Moving from one home to another, he struggled to find his place in the world. But amid the hardships, Troy felt a strong urge to make a positive impact on others facing similar struggles.
Setting out on his career path, following his graduation last July, Troy was drawn to working in the foster care system. He sought out agencies that shared his values of diversity and inclusivity, eventually finding a home at Berkshire. Joining Berkshire after earning his Master’s in Social Work at the University of Albany felt like a turning point for Troy, as he stepped into the role of a family specialist with a determination to support those in care.
One particular teenager, a 15-year-old African American boy, formed a special connection with Troy. Their shared experiences within the foster care system forged an immediate connection between them. Troy's understanding of the young boy's struggles and frustrations enabled them to build a foundation of trust and collaboration as they embarked on a path toward achieving his goals. This deep connection served as a driving force for Troy, motivating him to dedicate himself wholeheartedly to the young boy's growth and progress.
As he navigated his responsibilities, from supervising visits to coordinating services, he kept the importance of diversity and representation at the forefront of his mind. Every decision he made was guided by the belief that inclusivity breeds understanding and empathy, essential components in providing effective care.
“Growing up in the foster care system, I came to understand the importance of diversity within agencies. It's not just about the color of your skin; it’s about the culture and personal experiences as well,” says Troy.
Every day, Troy has approached his work with a deep sense of commitment, believing strongly in the importance of diversity and empathy. Beyond his daily tasks, he became an advocate for positive change within Berkshire, striving to create a more inclusive environment for everyone involved.
