The Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility was developed to meet the long-standing need identified by four counties (Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady) to provide a safe secure detention program for youth in crisis. In the past, juveniles in need of detention intervention were transported long distances.
Operated by Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth, the facility provides a safe, secure, and healthy environment for juveniles, most between the ages of 10-15. The facility is designed to protect these youth from their own impulsive behaviors, as well as to protect the community. The objective is to provide a firm but fair, controlled and structured environment based on simple expectations of mutual respect and dignity. The focus is on each individual resident's immediate need for self control, anxiety management, socially acceptable interaction with others, and reality-based program intervention.
The program provides for realistic assessments, coordination of systemic and family communication, and other efforts on behalf of the resident, in conjunction with court-mandated services.
