Poughkeepsie Group Home

The Poughkeepsie Group Home, in Dutchess County, serves males only, and is located on the outskirts of the city of Poughkeepsie. The young men residing in the home attend Roosevelt High School, which is within walking distance. However, group home staff provide transportation to and from school.

The home has five bedrooms and three full bathrooms. The living room, dining room, kitchen, and one single bedroom are on the main floor, along with the staff office and clinician’s office. Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms and one triple bedroom. The house was recently remodeled and has a new kitchen, carpeting, and paint.

The boys residing in the home wake up at 6:00am, eat breakfast and prepare for school. After school, they are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities and sports. Upon returning to the group home, the boys attend a "Community Meeting", where they get to tell about their day, and staff review the expectations for the evening.

The Group Home Treatment team aids in the cultural, clinical, recreational, and educational development of each youth by implementing the Berkshire Model of Care and Treatment (BMCT). This model builds on each youth’s strengths, using "teachable moments" throughout the day to reinforce their positive behaviors. In addition the Group Home is implementing the "Sanctuary Model", which is treatment intervention based on the tenets of trauma theory and addresses the ways in which trauma, adversity, and chronic stress influence individual behavior. Sanctuary is based on the idea that healing from trauma, stress, and adversity requires creating an environment that promotes healing.

Many of our boys enjoy going to the movies and the mall, and participating in “pick up” basketball games with staff in the community. They also can attend a local community “weight room”, which is a gym for members of the neighborhood at no cost.

On the weekends we schedule activities such as museum tours, outdoor activities (skating, attending local football games) and volunteer opportunities. We also encourage community involvement and the young men volunteer at soup kitchens, animal shelters, and nursing homes.

We invite you to visit us and learn more! We would be delighted to provide you with a tour of our group home, to answer questions you may have about our program, to introduce our staff, and to show you how we can provide services you may need.
