The Middletown Group Home serves males only and is located in the town of Middletown in Orange County. The house is located in a quiet, hilly, suburban neighborhood, and the young men residing there attend Middletown School District.
The school district is unique in that it has “Pods” of children so the guidance department and support services department work with the same children from year to year. This enables them to get to know the children and better provide for their educational needs. Each “pod” also has an administrator attached with it. The group home is in daily contact with the guidance counselors to track the progress of each child.
The day starts at 5:30 with breakfast and preparation for school. After school, the youth are encouraged to participate in after school activities such as sports or clubs. In the evenings, youth are required to participate in “study hour” where youth complete homework assignments or study for quizzes and tests. Youth also participate in Community Meeting where they talk about their day and plans are made for the evening. Therapeutic groups such as Independent Living, Anger Management, Social Skills, Grief and Loss also take place in the evenings.
The Group Home Treatment team aids in the cultural, clinical, recreational, and educational development of each youth by implementing the Berkshire Model of Care and Treatment (BMCT). This model builds on each youth’s strengths, using "teachable moments" throughout the day to reinforce their positive behaviors. In addition the Group Home is implementing the Sanctuary Model, which is treatment intervention based on the tenets of trauma theory and addresses the ways in which trauma, adversity, and chronic stress influence individual behavior. Sanctuary is based on the idea that healing from trauma, stress, and adversity requires creating an environment that promotes healing.
On weekends, youth get to visit with their families, participate in various recreational activities (museums, sporting events, movies, and mall) and volunteer activities, including helping at the local animal shelter and soup kitchen.
We invite you to come take a tour of the group home. Please call with any questions.
